Veterans Day Celebrations
Sacred Heart Catholic School
November 10, 2009
It was so wonderful to have veterans from our school and parish community attend Sacred Heart School’s Veterans Day Celebration. The school halls were decorated with a variety of Veterans Day pictures, anagrams, streamers, US flags, and other art and writing projects. At the beginning of the ceremony, each veteran told which branch of the service they had served in, where they were stationed, and talked a bit about their individual jobs. After the introductions, a very moving and inspiring prayer honoring veterans was read by our 8th grade teacher, Miss Van Dyke. We then had the flag salute and together recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Accompanied by Mrs. Saalfeld and Mrs. Nys all the school children sang, with great fervor, America the Beautiful and God Bless America. Next, our guests were seated in the school lobby and entertained by groups of children: K,1-2 sang Veterans Day to the tune of Jingle Bells, grades 3-6 sang Oregon My Oregon, and grades 7 & 8 recited a poem called Remember.
The veterans then went to visit the classrooms, giving the children an opportunity to learn a more about them, to hear about some of their experiences, and to ask questions. The children and their teachers loved being able to chat one-on-one with the veterans! Afterwards, home-made decorated cookies and other refreshments were available in the school lobby. It was a great experience for our children to learn first-hand about the dedication and self-sacrifice of the men and women who have served to protect our country. Thank you Mrs. Turner (a Navy veteran!) for this wonderful idea and for your hard-work in making it all come together. We hope to make Veterans Day celebrations a new tradition in our school. Most of all, thank you to our veterans – may God richly bless you!
