Learning Through Action

Students at Sacred Heart Catholic School are involved in many activities that integrate Catholic values across the curriculum both during the school day and in after school events.  Activities include:

The Buddy System:  Younger students are paired with older students for many activities including going to Mass.  Kindergarteners are buddied with seventh and eighth graders, and first and second graders have fifth and sixth grade buddies.  Buddies read and play together throughout the week and develop a caring relationship, which fosters a sense of responsibility for one another.

Student Council:  The Student Council is made up of representatives from each grade with officers elected from the upper grades.  The council meets during lunch and sponsors fun activities, aimed at service.

Roman Catholic (RC) Challenge:  The RC Challenge is a jeopardy-like competition in which teams from various schools compete with each other to vie for first place.  Students from grades 6-8 who wish to compete meet several times a month to prepare for the competition which is held at the end of Catholic Schools Week each year.  The students who participate in RC Challenge increase their general knowledge of the Catholic faith.

Sports:  The after school sports program begins in September.  It includes girls’ volleyball, co-ed soccer, girls and boys basketball and track competitions in the spring.  Our coaches are all volunteers.

Morning Prayer:  Every day begins with a gathering of all students and teachers. We sing, pray together, and recite the Pledge of Allegiance.  This is a time to recognize student birthdays and accomplishments, give announcements, and talk about school activities for the week.  It is a wonderful way to start each day.

Hot Lunch:  Hot lunch is served one day a week, thanks to the dedication of parents who volunteer to cook and work in the kitchen.

Yearbook:  The yearbook is a project of seventh and eighth grade students with help from other interested students in the school.  It is created during lunchtime and after school.  Students put into practice the skills they have learned during computer time using the digital camera, publishing programs, scanners, and their writing abilities to create a record of the year’s activities.  Yearbooks are printed in CD format.

School Newspaper:  The school newspaper is a project done by students from seventh and eighth grade.  Students working in pairs write, design and publish one issue of the paper each.  They work on the project with the help of their technology teacher.  This is a chance for students to put into practice the skills they have learned during computer time.

Catholic Daughters Contest:  The Catholic Daughters of America annually sponsor a writing and art education contest for students in grades 4 to 8.  A theme is given each year and students enter in one or two categories.  All students enter the contest.  The contest is something our classes look forward to participating in and winning!
